I was out checking on my seedlings this morning and another mesemb seedling has a bud.
This is a Stomatium alboroseum and it is only six and a half months old. The seed was sown 1/1/12 right after I moved into my new place. I had no idea they could reach blooming size so quickly. The seedling flat is in full sun all day and the plants are all in little two-inch pots so they are watered almost ever day.
Pretty neat huh? I’m not sure if the flower will open today as it is pretty foggy but I’ll try to get a photo when the bloom opens instead of just in bud.

Hi – could you let me know the soil mix used for this plant please, as have several packets of Stomatium seeds – cheers, Rose, Tasmania
I don’t really do anything special with my soil mixes only because it is a real pain to find good ingredients. I’m not sure exactly what I used for this particular plant but usually for my succulents I either use a straight cactus and succulent mix right out of the bag or I mix equal parts succulent mix, richer potting mix, and pumice. It depends on what I have on hand.
Thank you for answering my question – I have those ingredients – so will get cracking and start seeds growing – cheers, Rose, Australia
I just sow the seeds in regular seed starting mix in a plastic baggie on a heat mat. All of my mesemb seeds have germinated in 3 days to a week and I take them out of the baggie as soon as they germinate. They don’t go in a cactus mix until I pot them up and that can be anywhere from 3 months to a year.
Wow! That is quick and it looks great. Nothing that makes one as proud as a seedling flowering.
I agree! It’s very exciting. Especially for succulents which which I have only been growing from seed for about a year and a half.
